Welcome to a different kind of urban fantasy! If you’re tired of the same old tropes and looking for a fresh take on a classic genre, this book is for you. Here’s why this novel stands out from the rest:
This book may be filled with paranormal but it is not a paranormal romance
Forget about the typical urban fantasy that is confused with paranormal romance. This book sets the stage for an epic interdimensional world war. While there is a mild romance subplot, it’s far from the main focus. This story dives deep into complex themes and intricate world-building. The romance is subtle and serves to enrich the plot rather than overshadow it.
Slow build worldbuilding
Most urban fantasies, and most fantasies in general, really throw you into a new world and expect the reader to catch up with what is what, like the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. The world of the False-kin starts in our world filled with people who look just like you and me. Except that there is a deep secrete. When we discover how prevalent these secrets are then we can get into questioning all our assumptions for how the world functions. Until then, we have to work to build that emotional connection with our characters so the reader can really understand how the twist and turns of the plot affect them as a person.
Flawed Characters
Say goodbye to the overpowered, invincible heroes like Atticus in the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Herne or Harry Dresden in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. This book features a strong, but young, female main character, a more passive neuro-divergent male lead, and an ensemble cast of flawed characters. Each one is well-developed and relatable, making their journey and growth all the more compelling.
Complex and Hard Magic System
The magic system in this world is not soft and unknowable. Instead, it’s a powerful and complex system that the characters must figure out as the series progresses. It adds a layer of depth and realism to the story, making the stakes incredibly high.
No Common Tropes
This book breaks away from many of the common tropes. There’s no miscommunication that drives the plot. There’s also no “chosen one” trope, and the main characters are living their real lives and happen to be in the right place at the wrong time. They could be called unlikely heroes. This story even subverts the classic masquerade trope in a big and surprising way.
Deep conspiracy
And finally, one of the most unique aspects of this book: it has no… Shhhh, it’s a secrete. This opens up a realm (literally) of possibilities and adds a unique flavor to the story that you won’t find elsewhere.
Tonal shift
Some readers have described this books as “cozy with grit,” “lighthearted but will make you cry,” and “funny but deep.” We choose to describe the tone as lighter in the first half and increasingly darker throughout part two. This was an intentional choice.
The main tonal theme for this series is nobledark, like Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien and The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson.
